I'm going to we're in the the the early jobs house. And we're discussing the history of the dogs family. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 0:17
So as you know, we salzburgerland archives we had been involved in this project documenting some of the First Nations, the Indian history of the island and the connections between the the Indian people and the early settlers. And you ladies are descendants of the of those early unions. So, we'd be interested in any stories you could tell us about your grandparents and and any stories about granny jives.
Speaker 1 0:50
And another thing, we just got to take one, my aunt Mary Brenton. She's discussing the the early days. And the other one is partly by Mary Brenton. And I haven't haven't turned it on yet. I just got a couple of days ago. Mrs. Rachael, who the records donated the Drummond park out there. And, and Mrs. ruckle is just 94 for last week, and she lives that Ganges now. Her daughter Gwen is in the hospital. Whose name is Lotus. The mother's name is Lotus. The daughter's name is Gwen. And when there's pretty sick in the hospital now, grandma's about 70 I believe. And the mother is 94. So the mother has moved up there and can go and visit Gwen every afternoon. So as I say, I haven't listened to that tape. But maybe we could have time to listen to the both of them
Unknown Speaker 2:07
today. Where did you get the tapes from?
Speaker 1 2:12
Phil Phil had them and she she's lending them to to us and she wants them back. To get them from? I don't know for sure. I don't know. But she loves him to her daughter and her daughter returned them to fail. And then Phil. Get get lent them to me last word last week.
Unknown Speaker 2:36
And who is Mary Brenton?
Speaker 1 2:38
She is dad's brother, my sister. younger sisters. Younger younger would love to hear that.
Unknown Speaker 2:48
So what can you ladies tell us about your grandparents? Maybe? Who would like to start? Oh, sorry. I was wondering if you could tell us a bit about your grandparents story.
Speaker 1 3:03
Or should I put the tapes on now a lot what Annamarie has said she she can tell she said in the in the tape that that we would repeat. Okay,
Unknown Speaker 3:17
well how about maybe we should focus on your own personal memories like as young women you know your personal memories of your grandparents. You know
Speaker 1 3:31
my grandmother I hardly knew my grandfather all I can remember if we went over to the Brenton family house and that's almost next door to the to the fire hall. And my grandfather was so old he was so weak coming along the path. And then and then I was a little toddler tool and but I can just remember him coming along the path and that's about all I can remember about him. But my grandmother was much younger. And she she looked after. Jim and and Kelly, Jim Tilly is Jim sister acre. And a bob sister. She she wants to Ganges and lived in. They lived in a little shack and they went to high school. We didn't have any buses now. And so she she she allowed them to go to high school. Then then till Tilly later on became a nurse. And then they were older than me. And when I was ready to go to high school, she took care of me up at the Ganges in a little shack opposite the elementary school now right opposite Rainbow Road or the other side of Rainbow Road from the from the tool And then on the weekend, we would come home. And she would start out, start out walking from some Ganges and quite often to get a ride. But our dad used to bring us up to Ganges and it was a horse and ragged horse and wagon because we didn't have any cars, hardly any cars on the island. And then after, after school, I start walking, but my dad would come up with his horse and wagon and trying to granny up and by that time, she was almost home. She'd get a ride and ride home and partly walking. But But I get a ride with a horse and wagon from, from Ganges. So that was a very good contribution to getting through. Jim Kelly, a Coleman and myself, and you became an all around. Yes. And then then Doris. Was there with Granny? No, but but and when you want to first year high school? That's Ganges. Yeah. You and I got together. And Mark Margaret. Karen. Later. Yeah, yeah. And we lived in the same shack of grounding and, and, and I did with your call to come home, we wouldn't have the fire on oil. When you I went, we put the fire out before school. And we'd come home at noon time have some lunch, and water be frozen and like cattle. So that's what I remember about my grandmother. But another thing when they when grandpa Jobs came out. All this was forced in this valley. And he was they were clearing the land back of back at the firehall layer all along there. And all I had to work with was oxen. And my he get my grandmother come to come and drive the oxen. And, of course, there were a lot of logs and rocks and things as you can imagine. And they they've hit. They'd hit the plow on the on the rocks or the log and my grandfather used to swear. And my grandmother would say, Mike, if you don't stop swearing, I'm going in the house. And they just had a little log cabin no windows. And so Mike forgotten he floss. And inside my grandmother went and he comes in after a while. Maryanne come and help guide the oxen. I can't steer the oxygen and drive the plow at the same time. All right, and you don't swear anymore. Somebody says, Oh, I'll get that laughs made him wait long to finish scrubbing the floor. So she told me that story and and then they had as I say they have no windows in this log cabin. And they'd hear the wolves that night. And she'd go to the door and hear the wolves howling. On Teddy the mountain there was it. And people were saying oh my goodness, and I think their grandmother's afraid. But that's what they loved them when she was very, very young about 16 Or he had to go away to make money in his car there and should be left alone. Sitting here the walls going to how am I going to take the furniture and block the door. See the phone didn't come down out there. Anyway, but the reason that worked out He don't care. preempted in the valley. They were tall tall feeders in the valley. And he made he manufactured shingles. He was a wheel like by trade in Ireland. They get their trade earnings. When they're seven years old. They start to learn their trade. And so that feeders are 100 over 100 feet high 120 feet something like that. is a beautiful found the feeders that's why it had all the raw material One day when he went to church, well, they noticed smoke. And it was a set fire. Mr. Max, it was up on the mountain. And he thought and the other signs was that it was. So he lost. Lost. All those materials theaters are all
Unknown Speaker 10:20
like deliberately set. They come do they know who set the fire or why they couldn't
Speaker 1 10:27
prove anything? I guess they knew but they couldn't. It's there all at church. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway so that was about it. He didn't lose heart he he said that they would find go finding involved interested in finding. So they have to take the bird feeders down when we start farming. And ground his brother came over and over from college, and then he said, When the grandfather said it was I told them about it. And he said, Well, we should punish now. And he said, No, he said, We're mortal man. And we only know part of the story. Don't know what follows. Don't let God take care of it. So I thought that was really, really nice. So anyway, so then let's Wyoming? I think, David House that took 13 years of
Unknown Speaker 11:40
hard work. Where was the original log cabin kind of stuff?
Unknown Speaker 11:45
I thought maybe I'd give her the mic.
Unknown Speaker 11:47
Because I can hear really well. Okay. And you can hear me anyway. Yeah, I can hear you. You
Unknown Speaker 11:52
got to move. Well
Unknown Speaker 12:01
it's so close
Unknown Speaker 12:02
quarters here that. So this fire was a native person, Senator.
Unknown Speaker 12:11
Like I could check for the bathroom. Yeah, I
Unknown Speaker 12:14
can hear him. Yeah, yeah. It's probably leaving. Yeah, he's here. Yeah. He'll
Unknown Speaker 12:21
settle dandy. That will become fun it. Okay, if I let him in, and then he won't whine. Okay, sure. Let's try that. Okay.
Unknown Speaker 12:28
What's the party accent? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 12:30
It might be a little bouncy.
Unknown Speaker 12:40
Okay, that will go ahead. Okay. Did they? Was it a native person who set the fire? Or they don't know,
Unknown Speaker 12:49
then? No, they didn't. They didn't. They got more wealth. And they it was it wasn't a native.
Unknown Speaker 12:58
And they were it was the original log cabin.
Speaker 1 13:00
Let the cross you know about making a movie on them from across the road. And toward Musgrave. That's what's great. And a big feel that 10 acre field that belongs in my grandfather too. And it was back to 10 acres right again, you know, add to Tanika actually build his log cabin.
Unknown Speaker 13:26
So you mentioned your grandpa grandmother's brother who was from college and his name was his English name was Peter.
Speaker 1 13:34
He was also on the Steve said hey, and she was Indian princess. She's about the nation you know, First Nations.
Unknown Speaker 13:48
So did did that family come over here? Often Do you remember people coming from couch and and visiting? Well,
Speaker 1 13:53
it let's Sue Maxwell that he met when he was he was in the army. They heard about the caribou gold rush. So he wanted to go gold mining, but he didn't have any luck. And he did better with building cabins for the one to one stay behind. It's made a little money that way. But not all was lucky he made a lot of money. And when they were counting in Victoria, the different nationalities all all stayed in a group and they had their own place to go. And Max was Irish too. So that's how we met Max. And that so was interested in pologize and he was already over on the island here and in the life and uh, so her name was Mary, but anyway, so apologize that they go along and said that the land was cheap, going cheap over here and park and you know, And then how much money in the lands expensive? So he came over and he saw the cedars in the news.
Unknown Speaker 15:10
So mentioned Mary Maxwell was she related to your grandma's house?
Speaker 1 15:14
You see that Indians are allowed several wise they could afford, you know, so insane. And so Max won't marry love. Different mother ungrounded Oh, yeah, sisters. Oh, really? Yeah. And also Mrs. craggy? That was another one. A stepsister. And that's your grandmother. Great Grandmother. Great Grandmother. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 15:50
You guys are all related.
Speaker 1 15:53
And then she came over to visit them. And of course, my guy that's when we were in America.
Unknown Speaker 16:04
So I've seen all pictures of the Roman Catholic Church here St. Paul's. Now a lot of native people in front man. Do you think these sisters and do they attend that church? So they were fun? Did they attend the church? I do. Yeah. So it was your grandmother Catholic.
Speaker 1 16:22
While she maybe she became Catholic, a little later but she knows she was educated mutton sisters. Now she already knew how to proceed through more or less brought up by the sisters. They are still in flight with putting in news come down take slaves. And so they thought I saw the Queen chart. Indians coming in their canoes and Indian woman grabbed the chief son it was too for him and took off for the woods. And they saw her running and they look after her and she had in the fall blushes and she told the baby not to cry. And he'd done that said they were looking for all around the endless well versus ever knocking for this building that the baby stayed quiet. And then they gave up but they took the Chiefs mother and the other baby pretty tall as well as other women because they wasn't slaves. Then like the colors are
Unknown Speaker 17:41
good but yeah, just take place on Saltspring are
Unknown Speaker 17:45
more intelligent. Yeah, okay.
Speaker 1 17:48
So and then they tied the cheese wife to the canoe the crossbar in the canoes for her long term long hair. And I want to go out for Merrill's Well, the the baby started the fluff, and they didn't want to get caught because carrying you know, stones carried across the water. So it's a little baby to be quiet, it kicked out and the baby wouldn't be quiet. So the random variable and like, throw it overboard drought. And then the mother was acting up to feel upset about you know, you're gonna try and save the baby. She was making a fuss. So one of them is free. cut her hair. Loose. Mizuho overboard. So she was drawn to the chief's wife, baby. And it's on a storm big windstorm came up so they had to go ashore and until the storm was over, so one of the women got away as you fall on the shoreline back and he told me what had happened that the chief license was stolen overboard and the baby was
Unknown Speaker 19:10
a story. That's the story your grandma told you.
Unknown Speaker 19:18
So it seems too high on brownies water
Unknown Speaker 19:22
because it's rubbing on your collar
Speaker 1 19:27
while the rain fires grandmother Oh always reminded them about the Queen charts what they've done that drowned his mother and his brother and so on. And they want them to read that love and revenge. And that's how he was brought up here and trained in the woods and it was to train the base and he was a great warrior. So he ended up he did we They all went up there and went out some villages not to go to events. But they used to come down all the time and time. And Flight was a caller. And granny told me a different one. She said that one time they, I guess I saw him coming, and they'd be watching for them and mountain maple Bay. And there's a terrific flight out down. And the rest of the water was just love that. It doesn't get much blood to color, seawater, you know. And they won the battle. And so a hunter was away and he came back. He was so disappointed that he'd missed the battle. And they said, That's okay. They said, one of them going away. He's gone off the max off mountain. And so he took off after him. And way on and the night that heard them holding on that. They knew He got it. So they got them off. Do you remember any other stories that your grandmother told you don't melt Mexico? Yeah, see all of a sudden kilos called us, honey, gold and not long. And I say I thought to myself, that's an Annual Golden that and after a while she said they were afraid of Queen Charlotte so they're afraid for all their treasures and everything. And I guess I knew the down the creek don't react to them. So they bought them all over the Maximals mountain and hit the one guy and hit them head no, all the treasures. And I don't I guess it did come down on that. And so they after it was over, they won't look for them and never wants to be in a flight or something like that. Lots of people looked down. Anybody would tell anyways, we're just gonna be wearing a new suit. That'd be wonderful. We're still going and we could find them. Yeah, all our best work. You know,
Unknown Speaker 22:25
I know I've been up there in those boulders. I mean, there's all kinds of caves and nooks and crannies
Unknown Speaker 22:35
back so do you remember the native people coming over here and hunting or fishing or climbing? Can you tell us
Speaker 1 22:45
well, my role was coming to visit grounding her people. And we see them coming down and they're very, very, very kind people. And they always thought Ronnie shares, dried fests and crowns and and there's a whole bunch of them coming down the road. And we now know they look out the window and see them we can go blind. So we run out of the ground. Now it's time to be taken as a all data so we could see them going to be able to visit with Granny's relationship development, lots of problems, and they and they couldn't speak English, but you knew that they were very fun. Very fun to hear. They don't smile and so on.
Unknown Speaker 23:30
The relations they would arrive in Burgoyne Bay, I guess they would arrive and burger one day.
Unknown Speaker 23:37
Yeah, that's how the longer sensor knows they go with the tides and the winds and all that.
Unknown Speaker 23:42
And Bob has told us that there was a camp there are a village Do you remember stories?
Speaker 1 23:47
They told me that this is a very rich Valley and wild fruits, blackberries, black cats and anything you can think of as you said that it was divided in half the college has got Berglund half of it and the phallic people got you know for free. So that's up and she told me
Unknown Speaker 24:11
they respected each other's areas. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 24:12
so I guess we got together for now. You know.
Unknown Speaker 24:18
Bob pointed out a creek somewhere in the valley that marks the boundary that
Unknown Speaker 24:25
told me that she said half of it belong to the two of
Unknown Speaker 24:31
you. You guys ever go over there to couch and?
Speaker 1 24:35
Well, it's been a while. It's hard to get over there hard to get away because we didn't have a bowl. That's fine. You can't leave the farm. And mom and dad had five girls. You have a lot of work to do to be flown with chores to do. But every time they wanted them, he goes I said for him. He goes So, you're ready for the very kind
Unknown Speaker 25:10
of story how granddad met Granny, wasn't she swinging on a swing or something? She was very young. When she came home, no, he went over to the couch and granddad dies. Senior when he met Randy guys senior, she was very young and swinging on a swing. So remember that? told me that story was told and funny? Yeah, it's easy. Your granny dies. I can't remember who told me. That's how I first saw her and use that for
Speaker 1 25:44
the Home Depot and the chargers and so on. You'd be working in theater and it was pretty empty.
Unknown Speaker 25:53
For when he first met to Oahu we
Unknown Speaker 26:07
should be walking by.
Unknown Speaker 26:12
Because yeah, because your family had been coming here for you know how many years? Because the family connections with Mary maxvill. And yeah, interesting. Now, were there any native people that lived here on your own, say, like in a camp and Burgoyne or?
Speaker 1 26:31
Well, it's hard to defend, and avila's crane shots are coming down. Finland's everywhere. And this is like their summer camp for the Barians. And the fishing used to be lots of ducks and they drive them in the bow down and forwards and this time, we're
Unknown Speaker 26:59
all Yeah, yeah.
Unknown Speaker 27:02
Let's go Should I put those two capes on? Or
Unknown Speaker 27:08
maybe you could you tell us some some story that you might recall about your grandmother dies?
Speaker 1 27:16
And I can hardly tell him anymore. Except Well, when I went to school and well, that time she could understand the skeleton language. Do
Unknown Speaker 27:28
you use it as a child? Well,
Speaker 1 27:30
someone couldn't speak some of it. Yeah. But there is a story that you know that Aunt Mary told. Do you want to listen to that tape? Well, I just heard a bit of it. And then you have it right there. I mean, I didn't hear the end of that. So so you know it all anyway. So might as well put it on know that you want to talk to us now. Pardon me? Later, listen
Unknown Speaker 28:04
to the tape later now. How about
Speaker 1 28:09
you tell us your memory? All Yeah. But like, did you go out with your grandma much? And well, when I went to school, you know, she took care of us. Did
Unknown Speaker 28:19
you ever go berry picking with or planning or
Speaker 1 28:24
do you know what's comes out? Because they said I wasn't strong enough to walk all the way to the airport. No, no, no, let me just for one month to the same age. But that was stronger jobs took down
Unknown Speaker 28:44
would you go visit there? When you went to Beaver point with your grandma, gosh,
Speaker 1 28:49
I can't remember my smell Chuggington
Unknown Speaker 28:55
when that was born, they would have been living in Salford Oh, did
Unknown Speaker 28:58
you ever go to the Indian reserve? So can you tell me about visiting that point? Oh, wow.
Speaker 1 29:08
Well, it's sort of a treat for me because that will take out too long. And this time, she said that invited me to go camping with her sister and her brother. And of course, I just love to go right in the canoe. And it was great. You know, is no chores and those younger sisters to look after and so on. And I sit there her talk all night and didn't understand the language. And we had a lot going on on the beach. And I think there's a blanket thing I felt every last. I don't know where brother stayed but she and her sister now we have sort of attempt and another I talked to way ours was in the morning, but I'd fall asleep. So anyway, the brother got off early and I'm the sister. And she said she was gonna make I forgotten what they call like begging part of bonds. Back Yeah. And they go down when the tide was slack just before it turned out. It's when the water was pure and Megan's got salt water to make the biscuits. And they were really good. I don't know how she cooked. No, I didn't watch her. But all I had was a fire, you know. And he dug clouds and they pick them off and we haven't decided to have cloud backs. So he got a fireball in the rocks on the rocks, got red hot seaweed over and then he put the rock clams on the seaweed and cover them with more seaweed. No, they just seem fine everywhere. And now when the clams open the shells they were cooked. And then he you know, pull the rocks out and flood the Downloader. Remember that was really fun.
Unknown Speaker 31:12
With your buildings over there. I've seen old pictures of a longhouse. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 31:16
yeah.
Unknown Speaker 31:18
That's called an Indian Charlie. Yeah. There's no reason we were there.
Unknown Speaker 31:24
Do you know where this Indian Charlie was from? You know anything about this Indian Charlie? Like, where he's from? Or? I
Speaker 1 31:31
don't know where he is from but maybe found at checkout? Because they're supposed to belong to the sandwich people that was there. Yeah, yeah. So anyway, where they're building their mouth. Yeah, there was a big long building now. But nobody lives now. It's in lovely place. So many white people who have tried to take it over. But they've never met and made the grade. Yeah, I just tried hard. Yeah, that's it. Nobody lives there anyway, so why not? Why not sell it to us? And other people say no, you know? It was a beautiful flow. I
Unknown Speaker 32:14
love it. I love going down there.
Unknown Speaker 32:16
Do you recall? Do you remember seeing an old house there?
Speaker 1 32:18
I don't remember. But I remember trying to sleep on the beach. Oh, no, it's hard rock. I can remember enough to be exhausted when you went to sleep. By me. You'd have to be exhausted when he went to sleep.
Unknown Speaker 32:35
Bob said that. He called them cheap Charlie. Charlie, Oh, yeah. And he said that he made beautiful canoes. Yeah. Did you ever see any?
Speaker 1 32:48
No I didn't I think this one he they don't know exactly what happened to me disappearance? I guess you know the story. And they sound like people came over took everything over because people just wipe it anyway you never saw inside but there's a nice spring now.
Unknown Speaker 33:10
So ideal. Yeah. Beautiful.
Unknown Speaker 33:15
They were meant
Unknown Speaker 33:24
any other memories?
Unknown Speaker 33:28
Well, like about your
Unknown Speaker 33:30
grandma like she did she make baskets and stuff like that. And
Speaker 1 33:36
it's very helpful to pause on seeing how to shave a butter knife over 50 cents a pound. Stainless was knocked off. They had cows and that that was her job. And he said one night there was a cooler out there and chickens and grabbed their second was out after the cooler and it goes disappear before falling could get as done and then the Cougar was more afraid to grind expect some badass or forgotten
Unknown Speaker 34:16
she hasn't worked hard. They all have to work hard.
Unknown Speaker 34:19
Yeah, I understand. She was a midwife as well. Yeah.
Speaker 1 34:24
I'll make them a blonde smother to goodness. And when I was born in this house, and it was a big snowstorm, so London negative hast and also granny delivered the baby and my mother's sister. And I've got him he said that. When I was born, I was born with a veil over my head I guess. And she said to rip the veil apart and have my eyes but I don't remember black eyes looking at it now she said that first time she'd ever seen a baby born with the eyes or
Unknown Speaker 35:08
you know what my daughter was born with her eyes
Unknown Speaker 35:12
Do you have a veil to know that they
Unknown Speaker 35:14
send it my son had a veil when he was born all over the body but my my first daughter and never forget she talked up she stood up and looked at us and screamed at us eyes wide open staring at us and yelling at us when she was two years old, she told us to change and in our mother in another lifetime she wants she told us when she was two years old that when she when she did live in another lifetime we were her children switched around over the January I wanted to two years old these ideas
Speaker 1 36:00
My husband was born in an all body van and his mother cuts the veil mom would like to have developed but like I said didn't look after it you know when I never got it but been kind of hard to preserve it's supposed to be lucky the soldiers would like by the war but my husband got and his mother gave him a little piece of of animal side you know he kept his wallet yeah
Unknown Speaker 36:57
been told a series about granny dies having special relationships with wolves and having a special relationship with wolves.
Speaker 1 37:06
Why don't you please get out other ones to hurt the howling Tiger Mountain
Unknown Speaker 37:15
so when the when the relatives came over wherever they say
Unknown Speaker 37:19
they were drowning, okay.
Unknown Speaker 37:22
Yeah, they did camp here in the valley. They just camp here in the valley
Unknown Speaker 37:32
so Do you remember any of the Indian language any words?
Speaker 1 37:36
Forgotten? Gosh, I should have forgotten that. Yeah, can you understand? I can remember. I can remember granny saying I'm gonna but I don't know what it meant to sort of an extra exclamation and not
Unknown Speaker 37:54
dictionary Could you pick it up pretty quick.
Speaker 1 37:57
I don't get put a dictionary out we have they
Unknown Speaker 38:03
working on another one that's
Speaker 1 38:04
in Georgia. So yeah, well, daughter, Philomena. We met up with Philomena. My husband was in marine monitoring, moved to Port Alberni and the kids wanted to cat was gonna want the Catholic school and my oldest daughter after she could bring her friend home. And it was Philomena to go home and she said her name was Philomena Jordan. I guess you're related. No, I'm Donna went to work and Tanya to see was the secretary and the majority of our friends who used to go window shopping together. And one day Donna says you know she says you and I are related and me related to you don't have to bring it home but to never dead I guess it seems really shocking. When
Unknown Speaker 39:10
Nina actually went to school with me she was in the rain at her first and then tell me that I think was put back one year he was in migraine. And that's when we became yeah.
Unknown Speaker 39:22
Nice girl. Yeah, very nice. There was a time when we have a dispute over the windows three what they call on the glass windows, how the glass
Speaker 1 39:41
and that was looked after, you know, cleaning and all that. And if you thought you started somebody to love but yet once you got up so there was nobody around. There's a lot and so she told my husband about it. And he's he was on the council living neon, I believe so. And so we came down and sure enough, somebody's been they put imitation Rock Church. They want to look like stone church over in Cochin, right. And let's toss it over with no invitation. Lock. Yeah. And so anyway, they got the president can come down and then oh ya know? Yeah. How was it? How did that go? Didn't Bob Ekman try to get the wind the window down but he broke up one time. I still got it and pieces of knowledge on how to take the pieces away. And the big wheel and this has happened a lot to another radon, but I think it'll be pretty expensive 125 year anniversary? And why not? Why have a luxury like that?
Unknown Speaker 41:11
So the dispute was between who was who wanted the
Unknown Speaker 41:15
window? Oh,
Speaker 1 41:17
well, then John's had it good job. Bob didn't give me that window, because there are two of those vandalized. That's the one on the old stone church. Yeah. Because it doesn't decrease. And Indians gave us a lot of stuff from the stone church and collagen. Because the priest had built one on the reserve. And then the white people didn't want to go to church on the reserve. So they built another church just outside. So everybody wants to that. So the stolen characters Ansty. So they decided that since Fulford for people that don't even know that door, and alter the stained glass window, and now different things are just for the Windows a lot. And then the fellow elder, you put in the calmness that we stole a lot. Oh, I got my high horse. And I said, I gotta write a letter. Because right now it's a matter of time, I've written up two or three times, I started to calm down. Now I'm trying to get it just right. And I said, I better get some help and stuff. And her husband sitting back, I think, is waiting for him. And I found
Unknown Speaker 42:37
all fallen over on the phone with seven kids, and none here
Speaker 1 42:44
at Google Global. And she's getting help on getting help. And we wondered what to do. And we thought, well, we knew Father will calm. And he was very, very good at Campbell. And so we phoned them. And he said, the character he found the cost is very reasonable. I thought, well, we'd lost track of them, because they always kind of have a grounding. And we're busy with our own families and moving around, written off track and so on over there and tried to find them. And we had quite a job because, you know, because the last one lady said she knew violet George was teaching kindergarten at the school. So we went up there and founder told the window being in Nepal in the Congress that we stole it. And she said, Oh, no, I don't know who decided to ride Georgia or there's another another two in the school. They were looking after the school and quite big shots, I guess. And that's how she found us to robbing me. And so that's how we got back in with a Georgia stained glass window. So I explained it to him. And when we last he said, we'll see what we can do to bury the hatchet. So they came over father said, well, he'd killed them. They could have the thing guys went on and found there was opposition to it. So he couldn't let it go. And I said something opposition to it, we don't want it. So that's an outcome but then father, then want to put out the money. So we didn't have any money to fix it was system pieces. So it was up in our attic. And that's been there for years.
Unknown Speaker 44:44
Without having to mention that to one of the prisoners down here and all the ones that don't go this window
Speaker 1 44:57
but Guess who's here He's a carpenter. Three. I don't know. But that's the sort of schooling that goes along.
Unknown Speaker 45:08
What is the window look like? What is it a big round figures on it? Or is it just colored?
Speaker 1 45:16
Things color? Yeah. What's up behind the altar with the alternate look and see all the trees behind us all different colors and it's a certain church and watch the guy to get relevant because it's a responsibility, you know, I don't want to still on the big wheel spokes are gone out on the world. Large rubber
Unknown Speaker 45:47
thing you could have to find somebody that would be neat. I think the time to do that kind of work that to do the mill riding property, you know, it would cost you an arm and a leg,
Unknown Speaker 45:55
I think, gotten a job. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. But thank God Bob's brother had one done for his wife by consensus.
Unknown Speaker 46:19
So did a lot of native people use this church when you guys when you folks are younger
Speaker 1 46:26
Hawaiians to come as adults and have a wonderful voice as we're saying that sorts of things all day. They're good singers. Dorothy, how are you? Bob sister is to teach the Catechism when she had about 30. In her class, we confirmed the bishop and I was helping the seller which is good. She taught our students. Oh, yeah.
Unknown Speaker 46:56
So when your grandmother passed away, it was a big funeral there I guess. The church?
Unknown Speaker 47:04
I don't know whether I was away and I can get it. Maybe I was away. Yeah. Yeah, there's a bunch here. But you have a bowling. Ed student. So I put those two tapes on. He wants to talk to us.
Unknown Speaker 47:27
We could have been long into him so he could keep Oh, you haven't heard them yet?
Speaker 1 47:37
Well, I'd like to sort of hear them myself. Very well, one of the mics are the 60 Minute. But later they'll be great. And then has, you know at Mary speaking on a pillar speaking of the early, early, early years. Well, they have an adjustable button up I've got about it lets me down and narrow. And throughout the day under Mrs. ruckle. No, you know, in our family like I guess, mom. So do you want to hear it now? Or do you want to hear it now? Or
Unknown Speaker 48:28
after you finished it? They can get a coffee for the historical society by borrowing your tape. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 48:35
but I'd like to hear it first. Phil. Phil wants to back she's got a coffee.
Unknown Speaker 48:46
We can get a coffee.
Unknown Speaker 48:47
Listening to it though. You don't want
Unknown Speaker 48:51
to give us a couple of copies.
Unknown Speaker 48:56
Could you tell us something about this house?
Speaker 1 49:03
Well, it's modeled on the same style as as the Brenton that's next to the fire hall. And it was built by Mr. Eric Carter we used to live across in that old house. Like you can, that's still standing. Wait one. Yeah. And then dad, when he got married he he wanted us to house down like the house at Brenton. So, Mr. Arthur cart built this one to cost $2,000 Something like that. I think it was just $500 to build the steps out I'm just gonna take your dog out for a minute. Okay.
Unknown Speaker 50:04
So there's another house on the old maxilla and the Lummi property on Ganges Hill. It's sort of similar to this
Unknown Speaker 50:15
where if you go up the hill there you go in that long drive and it goes in. And then there's the house stuff in there. That looks like one of these
Unknown Speaker 50:30
you can't see it was just out spilled before you were born.
Speaker 1 50:35
Let's say, yeah, about five years before me. So
Unknown Speaker 50:43
I'm sorry. How old is it?
Speaker 1 50:44
I suppose. At least 995. I'm an undetermined Yeah. Oh, it must be at least 9087 87 Plus five or 92.
Unknown Speaker 50:58
So your your dad had to fill? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 51:03
I'd like to Urquhart build up I think they lived with Granny First off, didn't they? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 51:12
They live next door and the brands
Unknown Speaker 51:28
who did that? That painting of the church up there
Speaker 1 51:36
laughing Dorsa sister in law saw in the middle of Photoshop. While I guess I would have small picture or maybe so. APA Gansey one of those little photo shots. I think it's just about opposite. We're all in savings is that little shop was I think and she came home and told or got picture for Doris and Bob. And then then I think I don't know whether it was last week got that picture for a month did you I don't know that's not gone. Oh maybe fell but I was away when I was away to now she went down the face the nerves for 20 years. Where did you go? Portland? Well, first, I stayed at St. Joseph's for a while. And then we went to Quebec Montreal for a year and gone gotcha with hot in summer and human cold and winter. And I'm biased to stay there a year on came back to Vancouver and then Kili had been a nurse down in Seattle I believe. And so I thought I'd like to go down she stayed only a year but I said 20 years
Unknown Speaker 53:09
you're American citizen. And no
Speaker 1 53:10
i i got dual citizenship but when I came back literally took my American away. But I want her to jump back and forth but she can't be fingerprinted. She's washed your hands and different documents so much that we can't think of
Speaker 1 53:36
myself even an even then the bug has caught up to us. Yeah. You know, and we they got diarrhea in the nursery. All day. I got one one. Probably ravenala the father anyway, Damon visited his wife and he had the flu when diarrhea got in the nursery. One baby after the other got it. We'd have to dip our hands and Lysol my throat and went to the mother and washed down the walls and even then it kept going around. Wasn't bad bugs.
Unknown Speaker 54:18
Did you and Tilly were you inspired by your granny and all that she knew about caring people to go into nursing?
Speaker 1 54:29
Well, you could do sort of teaching and nursing wasn't so much monography job, I don't think but now the women are just branching out aren't they everything? Just as well do both times.
Unknown Speaker 54:51
Your grandparents had pretty close connections with the couch and community What about your parents so next generation they can But those connections are just sort of,
Speaker 1 55:02
it's hard for us to get over there. No boat work. I used to come twice a year in the spring in the fall I think that you'll still be more connected. Mum was from the North End and had her own people and that used to speak the language and everything and he got along with the younger boys through it. So that was good. You know enough about soccer. So he is that what the young boys about his age and then talk with them and everything so he got along with him. Of course he knew them better than mum, dad.
Unknown Speaker 55:55
And you said your mom was from the north end of the island Saltspring.
Unknown Speaker 56:03
Road. They have they own 700
Unknown Speaker 56:07
Oh my god. Tell
Unknown Speaker 56:08
me about him. No, it's not about telling me about
Unknown Speaker 56:12
your daughter. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 56:16
I used to walk along the wasn't grandma used to walk along the road. Yeah. And she thinks about the Indians being camped blown. Nervous? No,
Unknown Speaker 56:30
could you tell me about your interactions with the native people in the north end of the island?
Speaker 1 56:36
Well, my grandmother has lessons carts, carts fairies, and let's see. No, they both had like there were no I don't like running out here. But also candy and lines. So the cut through to how to lead them away from quitting jobs he tried to do? And the answer first, he got Queen Charlotte. So he married an MDM from Queen Charles out. No, that was the cuts right? And it was my grandmother. And she was the last man and woman came from running gallon reserves in the mouth of the sticky just below the yoke on or Alaska border that Donna? Yeah. Basketball. So there's, I'm working on that now. I'm doing a history. I'm interested in history. So I got all the
Unknown Speaker 57:40
data. Good. You're collecting it. So do you do you recall Did you live up in the north end? Did you live in the north end when you were always
Speaker 1 57:48
to go visit my grandparents up there though? No, I went down to pick us up. Mom in the wagon, Nanny come home and leave us up there for a week. Now he kind of gave us
Unknown Speaker 58:02
Do you recall meeting native people up there from Cooper Island?
Unknown Speaker 58:05
No.
Unknown Speaker 58:11
Well, yeah, we got a boat. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 58:13
I know. They came to that part of the island quite a bit to climb and stuff. Yeah.
Speaker 1 58:20
Wow. I was reading that. It wasn't cute brown. But I thought Saltspring taught it for soccer was whenever we went up there. And Fulford had a pretty good team. And so we went up there to play soccer. We're winning the Indians are going who who like that? I love what was going on. Get them asking for help.
Unknown Speaker 58:51
The game or keep the game you had a keeper. Do you want to keep her island for this game?
Speaker 1 58:59
To go all these to go without go to go to him and dancing. First off the the Fulford boys were a lot of them are Hawaiians are young. And they challenge the Ganges and they were a lot of fun. England they were professional soccer players. Bob's dad was 10,000 on the soccer team. Maybe he was champion rower. World Champions and Cambridge University. But anyway
Unknown Speaker 59:41
soccer playing
Unknown Speaker 59:43
soccer on cheaper Yeah, well
Speaker 1 59:45
anyway. That's the count of four for the weather down past and there was a nice one down to fall for them down there. And he says So PayPal anything will be some. It'll take five years. I'll try and give for five years. And of course the English are getting older. Right in their prime, right? Yeah. And boy, they beat the camera off his back. Was that the follow them around everywhere? Was that gum and new trainers? Who train the boys down here? Yeah, it's all around the White House over them. Oh, yeah. Wasn't eaten was it? I forget his name. Oh. So when you grew up did you go down to burgundy Bay a lot?
Unknown Speaker 1:00:41
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 1:00:46
Before going to school, this was Burgoyne Valley. Yeah, yeah. I would go there for summer picnics. And we used to go picnicking to take the free students and software on the beach. from Vegas every Sunday. It was fun
Unknown Speaker 1:01:05
to tell tales about Auntie Val and how she tried hard to keep gardening and grandma said no, she's done enough gardening and you'd already gone off and you've done your chores. You were heading down I forgot you were still gardening?
Speaker 1 1:01:26
At the time, you know, do you remember? Well, the mums we have to help with the hauling and all that we have a big potato field. This big field and I said the kids are all going down for picnic on the beach school kids. And we were holding long term salary for us. So she said they've done enough girls now that you can quit hauling and bone joins the kids school can start the Burgoyne Hall and all this gone. endzone kept right on haul and as a mom goes out there into the dozer you could go knock on unfinished trails sometimes that run over the hallways
Unknown Speaker 1:02:09
they wouldn't give that whole up let her have her own way she does remember that no one wants to come down late after we'd finish their supper and everything Don't be everybody
Unknown Speaker 1:02:40
wants to go
Unknown Speaker 1:02:55
will you have a cup of tea or anything
Unknown Speaker 1:03:00
at the ticket along for you
Unknown Speaker 1:03:03
just get a picture from a little further back before we get up
Unknown Speaker 1:03:09
yeah yeah okay just gonna get one picture for a backup of your nominee
Unknown Speaker 1:03:17
so that tape so you gotta take from Philomena you
Speaker 1 1:03:21
know my my sister Phil I don't know okay your school teacher teach anymore. Right hand side right here. Right up in the corner. Oh,
Unknown Speaker 1:03:37
so she did the same she interviewed Well, I
Speaker 1 1:03:40
don't know who took the tape. I don't know what that was the archives she said something about the archives in Victoria. So um to come around once in a while they have mom and dad in the area. I don't know. I don't know whether laffy was there or not I haven't you know, I haven't heard them completely. I only a part of one. But it sounded pretty good. Yeah. And she says Mrs. Rocco was on there. I'm one of them. Customers work a lot less much longer if she's mining for lead to be doing very well. And I have a picture of Mrs. Runkle I just saw the other day and the only piece of she and Gwen and but I don't know whether had to get her permission and we put her picture on TV and when she might not like it. But I mean, we have I don't seem to mind what I'd have to I have to ask I don't want to be filmed or something like that. But better better ask her first because Vance Ray Ray Fraser is related to to lifting with Russell but I hear Ray's got a very sore back got a social issue his wife said you think about crawling on the floor
Unknown Speaker 1:05:21
know he's got
Speaker 1 1:05:24
something like arthritis and he's had a good part of his life and then the other day he went out and his mother's place you know Edna Fraser only they've cleared a lot of that land up there and he was picking up rocks and that's aggravated is back so knowing crippled one thing those rocks keep coming up to you we've got the bill along we have a lot of work to do we are about all clear in a few years time oh
Unknown Speaker 1:06:01

Okay the front tonight oh, actually the divers originated in France with and there was a dispute going on the Pope would move to France and they are the Italians won the back in their country. He didn't like it so he moved to you know, I guess go to war or whatever. And move to Ireland and Trotz ever does adopt the dust and Ireland long long time ago
Unknown Speaker 1:10:38

Unknown Speaker 1:12:27
that's good you've kept the follow up. Now
Speaker 1 1:12:29
they use the above the white people who excel or names and so they didn't know what to name teach the hell up because I guess it's kind of a hard name and they said Oh, well. You should have a royal name because your chief and the was the George line and they did it. Yeah. He said he will be GA so that's another gorgeous Doris is getting a film her see her her granddaughters husband just took up college and the other day of the couch and museum
Unknown Speaker 1:13:19
no longer
Speaker 1 1:13:21
so he's taken the whole film I guess. And then he put it on the on the TV to be shown just last week so daughter's going to get a copy of the film's pictures I guess. Because they have a little money they felt solid timber. So Ron told me and I said you're going to share with me no no
Unknown Speaker 1:13:55

Unknown Speaker 1:14:46
Were you good?
Speaker 1 1:14:50
Know but in that in that tape, it describes the rock of on a kind of I think They gave that that big rock drum and pop record park right so and then thinking that she was 94 the other day that's you know the kind of interesting you have something about local park and there's a picture when their mothers
Unknown Speaker 1:15:47
more
Unknown Speaker 1:15:53
I can't really
Speaker 1 1:15:55
far away if it
Unknown Speaker 1:16:06
comes up I think that's it's like Marlon Arizona yeah
Unknown Speaker 1:16:22
that's a really cool picture spirit dancer shirt
Unknown Speaker 1:16:48
there have been
Speaker 1 1:16:50
know it's Baker's out on the road up here
Speaker 1 1:17:10
Indians roll their home really an expert on it. Hey John could do all designs
Unknown Speaker 1:17:21
that are fit me so well. And it just was it was a strain. Perfect What do you want the third? Oh guys are about the girls. Pew had a of granny if you have a beautiful bonnet on a map. And granny said I was counting. Counting counting. You're on hold. I can't
Unknown Speaker 1:17:55

Unknown Speaker 1:17:59
you got any Indian sweaters? Rally Nice. Nagar granny made who made that run you had on with Canaan.
Speaker 1 1:18:08
One of the Catholic Catholic ladies of Genji. Oh, this is amazing sweater. She made her daughter and her daughter didn't like it. So she gave it to me. And a lot of wear out of it. Oh, is it a real Indians letter? No, I think so. Yeah. Yeah. Lesbians are doing differently.
Unknown Speaker 1:18:33
You're wired now? Just wait a minute. Where's Yeah, I'd
Unknown Speaker 1:18:35
like to get a copy of that one day.
Unknown Speaker 1:18:36
What did you want now?
Unknown Speaker 1:18:39
Maybe take this off. And I'm gonna put the catalog.
Unknown Speaker 1:18:43
No, no, don't put in the catalog. You didn't relax.
Unknown Speaker 1:18:47
But But I have been for sure where the customer?
Unknown Speaker 1:18:55
Yeah, I read that. Actually, we're learning that, you know, it's always been thought that was a Saanich reserve. And in fact, that sounds like how it should incentivize people. Yeah. Well, well, the government has assigned its incentives. But you see, it really belongs to gouache and incense, people
Speaker 1 1:19:17
want to cinnamon on the skin like Greg does, he may have to put
Unknown Speaker 1:19:24
butter on nudie or who knew who the original owners were? And half of them were Cowichan. But the government of course doesn't recognize it. They just come and say well, we'll give it to the Senate until they sort of designated it as a fence reserved when it really should be shared. Now many people know that so I'm wondering about this Charlie? Like
Unknown Speaker 1:19:47
how much admin don't know, especially if your granny's to go visit him.
Speaker 1 1:19:55
Don't bother with that. Yeah, like the goddess paterna.
Unknown Speaker 1:19:59
Yeah. cuz that's more their place if they were given that reserve because there happened to be some of them camping on it when the government agents came around I
Unknown Speaker 1:20:08
don't know what they're missing is I don't camp on the full one.
Unknown Speaker 1:20:12
Oh, it's great, but maybe they know deep down they don't either. Yeah. Because they never go over there hardly ever we found out you know, we're starting we're trying to kind of piece together the puzzle of it all. This is really good. I'd love to get a copy of that one day. When your daughter
Unknown Speaker 1:20:33
you want to coffee?
Unknown Speaker 1:20:34
Yeah
Unknown Speaker 1:20:39
I do it. But like what I could do is come by your place Sunday and just take it in photocopy it, then I could transcribe it and I'll give you a copy because I I know how to type it's really interesting history
Unknown Speaker 1:21:02
is computer anyway? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1:21:09
So who did all the changes here?
Unknown Speaker 1:21:11
Oh, I was correcting. Oh, I did a spelling. Yeah, right. After couldn't spell if you go to somebody's spelling all the time. Get so how do you spell up?
Unknown Speaker 1:21:24
This Peter is granny jives this brother.
Unknown Speaker 1:21:28
Yeah
Unknown Speaker 1:21:33
get the picture of EMS thought museum one of one of her brothers. Anyway. Did you have more than one or the one on ground? Well,
Unknown Speaker 1:21:43
you know George like Keith and Peter granny and
Unknown Speaker 1:21:54
the half sisters that were your great grand mother.
Speaker 1 1:21:57
Yeah. Well and all the dogs on strike now related to get the cousins
Unknown Speaker 1:22:05
yeah
Unknown Speaker 1:22:13
who is Lassie dogs involved? She got these stories, I guess. How did she get these stories just
Speaker 1 1:22:21
from talking to my mom and dad love. Oh, yeah. And to talk to me the secret for love together everything he could about them
Unknown Speaker 1:22:37
so don't feel
Unknown Speaker 1:22:45
to just a very small
Speaker 1 1:22:53
tone laughing that the bat and mum don't laugh at the story. They're sort of Oh, and then she picked some up from from you during the round. All
Unknown Speaker 1:23:10
right, Brandon. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1:23:13
I don't think Tucson in Arizona similar than I don't think he's very busy, you know. So so last day took a course and in writing I know a few read a lot of books. Oh, Jane. She's learning.
Speaker 1 1:23:33
You know, can you talk on anything? Bible? What have you read all the time? Don't read too many books a week series.
Unknown Speaker 1:23:47
Keep in mind, you
Unknown Speaker 1:23:49
know, active and good reading your mind sort of a work in
Unknown Speaker 1:23:58
the paper read enough. You said
Unknown Speaker 1:24:01
that your granny was an Indian that your granny was an Indian princess. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1:24:07
She's the daughter.
Unknown Speaker 1:24:12
Do you know how she looked her boss said that she would tell me that she was a midwife. Right? Yes, she was. How did you learn that? Well, I
Speaker 1 1:24:23
guess she had to do it. She the nuns tell her to and advocated by the nuns. They knew when they got married you know how important your dad was a small baby tool. He must have been pretty mature and
Speaker 1 1:24:54
and Elon took care of him. We didn't have any incubators, then. and doors are saying Dad was putting in a matchbox one of those big matchbox and he was so small but kind of hard to believe that I thought you said I didn't see or must have a fill in but I said I can hardly imagine Oh no, I don't see that. That's just because your hand was almost alone. And then an LM took care of them and put them behind the stove and kept them warm. They couldn't sell clothes wrapped in cotton bearings for scandalous attendance. So he must have been bigger than putting a matchbox Yeah, it must have been sealed
Unknown Speaker 1:25:53
Was she the first midwife on the island?
Speaker 1 1:25:56
Well, Sienna Ellen used to glow to you know the white people were looking after them when they had the babies and no dogs all around here you know
Unknown Speaker 1:26:10

Unknown Speaker 1:28:53
Good you're doing this

Oh good. Because the kids like
Unknown Speaker 1:29:10

Speaker 1 1:29:34
Ground was really strong. If a pod dies with the hay, and we picked it up the cost of hay and cover them up, didn't get there. Because teason
Unknown Speaker 1:29:49
did she gather like any Indian foods
Speaker 1 1:29:55
and one time she didn't have anything in the house to cook for dinner. Oh yes, you go down the beach and things and clubs don't say went down. Doug's income came down and custom fall came in. Where do you get this class
Unknown Speaker 1:30:19

Unknown Speaker 1:30:28
very organized and
Unknown Speaker 1:30:31
he finds you. Everybody loves to
Speaker 1 1:30:37
go as well. Okay. Mom had twins Elma and Trump. They were six months I couldn't live they just cried and down baptize them and that was the order a light one, long bones and Sarah and the other was short boned and dark. So right next apologize as grave towards the day. And Bobby goes around, lose everything and put some railing up and put around a little film there, Marianne and was pa jaws. It was supposed to touch those grades. And granny and they'd ask God if they could bury granny on top of the twins. Dad gave us permission. So the twins are buried, and I'm drowning. And then there's pod dies. And then Bob Eccles mother is right close to the church. Oh, no, I'm good. No, he moves a lot over his grave. She?
Unknown Speaker 1:31:57
Least very cool. We do this? Should I leave them with you or take them or? Take an interesting, I'll take care of them. I'll watch that history into I know the value of that stuff. And I'll tell you, good afternoon. I'll give you a copy. Copies too. You can the archives have a copy too? We put a copy in the archives that if you come across any other stuff or any other memories, you know, yeah.
Speaker 1 1:32:35
I know it sounds like the stories that she told mammoths about birds and it would be very valuable. Yeah, it was kind of a moral story whether you call it a good book of our own, like, yeah, I forget what to call Donald moon. Well, they be
Unknown Speaker 1:32:56
the Indians would call them Sno Isle, which is cultural teachings. Yeah. That's how they would teach young people just a little story. Yeah, white people here.
Unknown Speaker 1:33:07
There's a lot of more
Unknown Speaker 1:33:09
eating. Yeah, morals in them teaching
Speaker 1 1:33:11
is that they were one time they were like some Indian children out to. And one guy he was lazy. So the others had done well. They pick the berries and so on and, and the laser guy, he didn't have very many berries. So he did the way he do because the people were becoming you know, the grownups and we were embarrassed. So let's see, do we caught forces do so over his head? And he's all felt sorry for what happened, you know? And then there was a little bird up on the tree. He's watching. He's built the story that we've been watching. Used to have fun talking. We enjoyed it. I've
Unknown Speaker 1:34:01
heard that story. You know that story. Raven, yeah, sorry, Raven, and I
Speaker 1 1:34:08
have two or three there, but it's been quite a while since I've worked with it. Oh, I'd love to find that. Right on. It's in my bedroom that I guess. So how do you guys all
Unknown Speaker 1:34:20
relate to each other? How many
Unknown Speaker 1:34:23
children like you're bought?
Unknown Speaker 1:34:24
Pardon? But how are you related? Like Val, your best sister? Like how many siblings do
Unknown Speaker 1:34:31

Unknown Speaker 1:34:37
