Sophie Purser King 1880-1975
Sophie standing and her sister Georgina.
Sophie’s father was George Purser (about 1837-1883) known as the long- stocking Englishman because he wore knickers and long stockings. Sophie's mother was Sarah [Annie] Fisher Purser the daughter of a Cowichan chief.
Sophie's father died when she was 3 leaving her mother, Annie, to support seven children on the family home on Stowell Lake. She found work at the Inn in Fulford and for a time took Sophie to work with her. Her older brother felt this was too hard on their mother and arranged for Sophie to live and be schooled at the Sisters of Saint Ann Convent in Cowichan. She loved her time at the Convent staying there until she was 17. For the next seven years, she worked as a domestic in Victoria, Seattle and Tacoma before returning to the family home on Stowell Lake. It was there she met and married Leon King.

Walter Henry Loxton 1893-1977
Vera King met Walter when she was working in Vancouver. They were married August 5, 1927, in Seattle, WA. Walter was born in England and most of his working life was spent aboard ships, starting with sailing ships. During Prohibition in the U.S., he and some partners used small motorized boats and did some rumrunning. It was always an exciting race with the U.S. Coast Guard as to who had the fastest boat.
At least once, Walter had his boat shot at and sunk and had to swim to Whidbey Island. For the most part, the rumrunners must have won these races as this was a financially successful period for Walter and Vera.

Could be some of the partners in Walter's business venture. There were several cars they used for distribution of their product. One day while in Seattle, Vera wanted to use a car to go downtown shopping. They gave her keys to one of the cars. While driving downtown, she was stopped by the police for going the wrong way on a one-way street. However, the policeman took pity on this young Canadian lady and just gave her a warning to be more careful. When she returned and told her story, there was a flurry of excitement as the men ran to check the car. The back end of the car was full of liquor ready for distribution to a customer.
