Educating the Gulf Islands:
A History of the Gulf Islands School District
The regular meeting of the Salt Spring Island Historical Society will be on Wednesday March 11, 2015 at 2;00 pm at Central Hall. The program will be presented by Bob McWhirter, the President of the Gulf Island Retired Teachers Association.
This presentation will give an overview of the history of the Gulf Islands School District. Its inception was marked by the building of the log school house at Central and the first teacher, John Craven Jones, who had traveled with a group of black settlers from California. Bob will outline the development of the early School Districts and the difficulties faced by early educators, through to the creation of the current District.
This program starts at 2 PM at Central Hall and is open to the public, After the presentation questions will answered. Tea and coffee will be available, Please remember to donate your Country Grocer tapes to Box 131 to help preserve our history.
