Doctor on Salt Spring from 1912-1914. Son of retired British Army surgeon, Colonel Lionel Beech, who came to Salt Spring in 1904. Invited son to join him and take over practice.  Both lived on Ganges Hill (in separate residences?) Both names shown on “1912” map.
Enlisted May 8, 1915, Esquimalt.  3rd Field Ambulance.

Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, July 12, 1900. 153rd Regiment d’infantries, 77th brigade, 39th Division 20 Army Corps. Conchin China “commanded an Annamite Regiment”.
Called up Aug, 1914 Left Ganges Harbour before Aug 20, 1914 “admidst much demonstration”(Cowichan Leader.) 329th Regiment. To Captain, appointment on the senior staff of the 1st Army Corps.1916; Oct 1917 named advisor to US Army.

Blandy, C.M.
Murray mentions a “Mr. Blandy, proprietor of Burgoyne store”. C. Kahn, The Story of an Island, pg.166 mentions “Dr. Marjorie Blandy, daughter of R.R. Blandy who ran the White House…was one of seven female surgeons in the Women’s Hospital Corps.”
“1912” map shows a “Blandy” property on Upper Ganges Road, east of Central.
Canadian War records mention a Captain Claude Milberne Blandy, Royal Field Artillery. 36 years, son of Richard and Ada Blandy of Madeira, died April 8, 1916. Buried at St. Seven Cemetery, Rouen, Plot A.27.

Bought Socrates Tobias Conery’s farm surrounding Conery (later Blackburn) Lake. Hired Charles Beddis to build house. “Previous service”—Queens Rifles, Royal  Scots Volunteers (8 years). Farmer. Married. Ran out of money and abandoned his unfinished house leaving many suppliers unpaid. Enlisted June 16, 1916 central recruiting centre,Vancouver. B.C. Co. 196 O/S battn. Western Universities 911992. Returned to Salt Spring and died in 1925. Buried in St. Pauls’ cemetery, Fulford. House now Salt Spring Centre. (see Ovanin,1984: 75, Kahn,1998:158). Rancher. 20/60 vision, faint cardio respiratory  murmur, 5’ 6”, “A small wiry man, a builder”, (Hill et al,1983:48, worked on construction of Trading company building where he fell from roof) and a farmer. Enlisted  2602031 RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 894-52. Married Florence Muriel Wilson 1904. Lived on “large tract of land at Long Harbour.”  Before purchasing Charles Tolson House on Ganges Hill.  Adding addition and four children born there.  Later, after war, they moved to what is now Day Care center and operated Ganges Motor Camp.

Churchill, owned property at Maple Bay (now Churchill Road area) Enlisted at Valcartier, Quebec, September 24, 1914, 1st Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment. (And Royal Canadian Dragoons) “Died of wounds, September 7, 1915”. Buried in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Belgium, Plot A3. Son of the late Edward H. Churchill,  Sandway House, Burnham-on-Sea. Next of kin, Mrs. E.H. Churchill, the Lydens, Brideswater, Somerset, England.

Name, F.H.Corbett, appears on 1922 Ganges Cenotaph suggesting that he died overseas after Sept. 1917. Sapper Henry Corbett, Canadian Engineers , 166626” Died in war, unknown cause, November,15,1919. 26 years. Buried Cambridge (Mount View) Cemetery, Ontario. Plot: Range 16, Lot 14. Son of James and Margaret Corbett of Galt, Ontario. Husband of Agnes Corbett, of  8, Mynesham Green, Hawick, Scotland.

George Calcott. 1099216 Name appears on Ganges Cenotaph as G.R.C. Calcott suggesting that he died overseas after September 22,1917.
