Charles Appleby lived on Salt Spring at the beginning of the twentieth century. He was considered to be deranged, but proved able to foretell the future. One day in 1911, he became very upset and claimed that the Iroquois, the steamer then serving the Gulf Islands, had sunk. People tried to calm him down, but as it turned out, his story proved true. Twenty-one people died that day when the boat sank off Sidney.
