In his memoir, Vern says that he “and three others, cousin Mac Mouat, Jack Abbott and Ray Morris from Salt Spring Island, arrived in Victoria, BC at No 11 Manning Depot” on the afternoon of September 19, 1939.

Jerry Mouat (age 15) travelled with them, intending to work on their farm. Beth Purvis was Lydia Mouat's best friend.
