Burgoyne Bay Union Church and Burgoyne Bay Methodist ChurchOriginally, Burgoyne Bay Union Church and Burgoyne Bay Methodist Church, built in 1887 to be shared by all the congregations in the southern part of Salt Spring Island. The land for the church was donated by Arthur Robinson. It was the north-east corner of his property facing Fulford-Ganges Road. The Anglican congregation soon moved out to the original Burgoyne School building, seen to the right in the photograph. The Methodist congregation remained in the Burgoyne Church building, which in 1925 became the United Church of Canada.
Recently cleared land with a snake type rail fence. The church building is a single room with 12 benches, a lectern, organ, and small furnace.

Reverend Ebenezer Robson
Reverend Ebenezer Robson was the first Methodist missionary minister to come to Salt Spring Island. He came from Nanaimo in 1861 and 1862, in a sloop carrying a canoe and native guides. While on Salt Spring, he travelled all over the Island, staying with the settlers and preaching, baptizing and performing marriages and generally attending to the spiritual needs of the Christian community.

He was present in 1887, at the inaugural of the Burgoyne United Church building, which at that time was called a Union Church. Rev. Robson kept a diary which includes mentions of his early visits to Salt Spring Island, copies of several pages to follow.

Diary of Rev Ebenezer Robson
A page from a diary kept by Reverend Ebenezer Robson. This page describes his arrival in the channel off Beaver Point on Salt Spring, being met by Mr Ruckle’s man and rowed to Ruckle Farm where he was served tea by the Ruckle family. After tea, Mr and Mrs Ruckle, their son and the man, rowed around to Fulford Harbour and walked to Mr Arthur Robinson’s. He addressed the Blue Ribbon meeting in the evening where he was glad to say that several ‘took the pledge’, and slept at Robinson’s.

Diary of Rev Ebenezer Robson
A page from the diary of Reverend Ebenezer Robson describing his opening and dedication of the Burgoyne Union Church at Burgoyne Bay, Salt Spring Island. He visited the school and several houses in the area, dined at Mr Lee’s and drank tea at Mr Horel’s, who was the builder of the church.
Next morning he rode horseback to Beaver Point and “was rowed out to SS Rainbow, which was along in good time.”

Henry Ruckle 1835-1913
Henry Ruckle, born in 1835 in Ireland to German parents, pre-empted land on Salt Spring Island in 1872. He was one of the original six trustees of the Burgoyne Bay Church. Henry Ruckle died in 1913, aged 77 years.

Mrs. Henry Ruckle (née, Ella Anna Christiansen)
An early member of the Burgoyne Bay Methodist Church, Mrs Henry Ruckle was a devout Christian woman, born in Norway, who was left a widow with a young son, Alfred. She married Henry Ruckle in 1877 and they raised four children, Alfred, Ella, Agnes and Daniel Henry.
Ella Anna died in 1930.

Mrs Thomas Mouat (née, Jane Manson)
Jane Manson was not only an early member of the Burgoyne Bay Methodist Church, she was also a hard-working woman who was involved in many church functions.
Born in the Orkney Islands, Jane married Thomas Mouat there after his first wife died, leaving an infant son, Thomas, who was brought to Canada, along with his maternal grandmother, when the family emigrated.

Mrs Lee Thomas, (née, Elizabeth Mollet)
Elizabeth Mollet was a mainstay member of the Burgoyne Bay Methodist Church. She was the organist and led the singing in the little church.
Elizabeth, (Lizzie) married Tom Lee, son of Thomas Lee, the original settler on the west side of Lee Hill, and they had two sons, Clifford and Ronald.

Robert Ewen McLennan1879-1901
Ewen Robert McLennan was the first person buried in the Burgoyne Bay Methodist Churchyard. The eldest son of Alexander and Elizabeth McLennan, Glenshiel Farm, Beaver Point, he died of blood poisoning at the age of 21 years. The red granite monument over his grave was brought from Scotland, around the Horn by sailing ship.

William Hudson Lee, eldest son of Ed Lee with his wife Martha Pollard, sitting beside his wife, Margaret Christina (Maggie McLennan) Lee, and holding their infant son, Arthur Lee, about 1923.
Maggie Lee was a long time caretaker of Burgoyne Church. She belonged to the Womens' Association and was active in all restoration and maintenance of the building.

Lizzie was married to Tom Lee, son of Thomas Lee, who came to Salt Spring in the 1880s and settled on the west side of Lee Hill. Thomas Lee was brother to Ed Lee.

On August 23, 1997, Burgoyne United Church suffered a serious arson fire. After restoration, the Little Church in the Valley was the scene of a rededication service on December 13, 1997, conducted by the ministerial team of Sharon and Barry Cooke, who were the Salt Spring Island United Church ministers at that time.
