Bond Collection

The first member of the Bond family to settle on Salt Spring Island in 1906 was Jesse Bond. Jesse’s father passed away in 1903, leaving his mother widowed with three children. Unable to care for Jesse, she placed him in the Protestant Orphanage.

Mr. Henry Bullock, well known on Salt Spring for his boarding house, grand parties and training of young boys, took Jesse in as his houseboy. While with Mr. Bullock, Jesse learned many useful skills:  farming, animal care and photography.

Jesse Bond fought in World War I and upon his return, purchased a farm under the Soldier’s Settlement Program. He later sold this when he went logging on Vancouver Island. Jesse returned in 1932 and purchased 200 acres on LePage Road. There, with his wife, Mary, they raised two children.

The family farm, still operated by Bonds, continues to sell delicious produce to the island.
