Chère Maria
Je regrette de n’avoir eu le temps d’écrire en même temps que la dernière letter de papa,
[I regret not having been able to write at the same time as the last letter from papa - ] pourtant, depuis j’ai une raison de plus,
[nevertheless, since then I’ve had further reason (to write) - ]
nous avant ouvert le gâteau le jour de Noël 25 Dec.
[we opened the cake on Christmas Day, 25th December - ]
sans ton cher Paul, malheureusement,
[without your dear Paul, unfortunately - ]
mais enfin en famille puisque Edouard était eu permission de deux jours,
[- but in the end as a family since Edward was granted two days of leave - ]
et nous l’avons savouré, je t’assure, admiré le savoir faire de la cuisinière le bon état de l’emballage [page 2] la bonne conservation de ce beau gâteau.
[- and we savoured, I assure you, admiring the savoir faire of the cook (the know-how, the expertise), the excellent packaging, for the proper care of this beautiful cake.]
Nous l’avons découpé, à la fin du répas de Noël en allant des (bards?) vers le centre, où nous avons discerné la fameuse pièce qui de cette façon était pour tous et pour personne.
[We cut the cake at the end of Christmas dinner by going towards the centre, where we discerned the famous piece which in this way was both for one and for all.]
Un bon morçeau a été carré pour être envoyé à Paul.
[A good portion was squared off to be sent to Paul.]
Puis nous avons trinqué à la santé de ce cher petit bonhomme de Pierre, à celle de ses parents reparés, naturellement, et à leur réunion pas trop lointaine.

Ton gâteau, cher Maria a donc contribué à embellir cette fête de Noël, qui pour notre ménage a été bien bonne.

Nous aurions voulu sentir tous vos frères poûvant goûter les mêmes joies.

Nous savons Paul content d’être là où il est, c’est quelquechose, et voici papa qui se propose de se rapprocher de lui en allant à Anciens quelque temps.

Il manquera ici, comme père d’Edouard, comme grand-papa, comme pasteur suppli’ant. [He will be missed here, as Edward’s father, as a grandfather, and as a suppliant pastor.]
Mais j’espère que cela ne durera pas trop longtemps, et leur fera plaisir et qu’il aura le plaisir d’y voir Paul.

Pour ce qui est de notre vie journalière, il n’y a rien de nouveau, demain l’école recommence, [As for our daily life, there’s nothing new; tomorrow, school starts again]

à la maison [page 3] il faudrait plutôt dire 4 car voilà déjà 1 mois qu’il est sur le dos et ce n’est pas dans 2 mois qu’il sera capable de retourner sur le front.

On le gardera sûrement pendant 9/9 temps, au dépôt pour instruire lu cl.1917 qui arrivera dans la casernes au Xbre. Nous pouvons donc dormir, ma chère Maria, pendant 9/9 temps sur nos 2 oreilles.
[He will be kept a good eye on 24/7 (?), at the instruction depot (?); lu = read?; which will arrive/happen in the barracks in December? We can therefore sleep, my dear Maria, 9 out of 9 times (?) on both ears...]
Remercions toujours Dieu de ce que dans les dangers qu’il a courus Psuel trit sucore en vie et mésur blessé si légèrement. C’est une bien grande bénédiction de ce qu’il en est ainsi.
[We thank God every day that, in the dangers which he has run, he is alive, and wounded so lightly. It is such a profound blessing that what is, is as it is.]

Benjamin s’afforce de faire venir Edouard à l’Hôpital d’Anciens, comme sergent infirmier. [Benjamin has managed to have Edward taken to (eventually sent to?) the Veteran’s Hospital, as a nursing sergeant(?)]
Jè le désire de tout coeur, car je crains qu’on ne prélève dans la Section un détachement pour le Service Sanitaire en Serbie.
[I long for this with all my heart, for I fear that one is not signed up for any medical corps detachment in Serbia.]
Je t’avoue que je n’aimerais pas voir l’un de nos fils aller sur ce front lointain dans un pays à moitié sauvage et misérable. C’est suivi que nous sommes très inquiètes.
[I confess to you I would hate to see one of our sons go to the Front deep into a country half-wild and miserable. It follows that we are very worried.]
Cette guerre dans la balkans [page 4] ne pas avouer l’heure de la paix, loin de là.
[This war in the Balkans does not admit a time of Peace, far from it.]
C’est la retraite russe qui est la cause de tout cela. L’allemagne fait peur à ces petites nations, qui croient à ses succès
[The Russian retreat is the cause of all this. Germany puts fear into all these small nations, who believe in its success..]

Je suis bien servis de ma maladie. Je fais de nouveau des visites dans la parvisse comme avant.
[I am getting used to my illness. I am re-visiting the square as before.]
Sais-tu qu’Edouard et des amis ont craint pour ma vie en me voyant so malade.
[Do you know Edward and friends feared for my life seeing me so ill]
On craignait surtout une nouvelle attaque qu’aurait pu m’être fatale.
[Above all, a new attack was feared which could be fatal.]
Dieu a bien voulu me laisser encore pour 9/9 temps sur cette terre.
[God has been kind enough again to give me more time on this earth.]
Je lâcherai d’y faire encore quelque bien dans la mésure de mes forces et de mes moyens.
[I’m giving up doing much good any more within my strength and my ability.]
Courage, ma chère Maria, ayons Ijrs confiance au celui qui a veillé jusqu’ici sur nos bien aimés. Ils sont Ijrs autre ses/des mains et ils Ij seront toujours.

- pour Samuel, au village pour Suz. et Alfred. Il fait aujourd’hui une temperature douce comme au mois de Mai. Je ne sais s’il en est de même plus au Nord.

On s’est souhaité la bonne année, la paix, la vie faire sans trop savoir comment cela pourrait se réalisers. Le mieux, c’est de se confier en Dieu, et d’espèrer que les membres de notre famille a l’arrivé et sur le front, sortiront de bout cela suivre bien qu’ils s’en sont routes jusqu’ici. Ce ne sont pas des vacun(?) en règle qui je padrerre(?) chère Maria, ils seraient un peu tardifs, mais c’est a qui je demande chaque jour par le prière pour toi comme pour nous tous. Et tu as besoins d’avoir plus de patience que nous tous.

C’est pourquois je t’embrasse bien fort
ainsi que ton petit Pierrot.

The best thing is to trust in God and hope that the members of our family have achieved this; and at the Front, will emerge as well in the end as they have done so far. These are not ruled [-?] that I [- ?] dear Maria, they will be a little late, but it’s what I ask each day in prayer for you, as for us all. And you are in need of more patience than all of us. This is why I hug you really hard, as I do your little Pierrot. Your affectionate sister, Nancy.]
