William Naukana

William Naukana arrived on Salt Spring Island in 1875. He is believed to have been of royal Hawaiian lineage. He worked as a guide and interpreter for ten years with the Hudson Bay Company. He was at Fort Vancouver, New Caledonia, Thomspon’s River, Fort Langley and Fort Victoria. He returned to Hawaii, but came back to the Northwest Coast living in the San Juan’s and later, with his partner, on Portland Island. He had at least six daughters (wife’s name unknown). The daughters had to row to Beaver Point to attend school. They later moved to Salt Spring Island. He died in 1909.
