The Lee Family of Salt Spring Island

Gordon Lee

Lee family

What is the story behind the name “Lee's Hill”? Where is “Maple Hill”? Is there a connection? Why are there two giant red hawthorne trees on Fulford-Ganges Road? What were the connections between the Lee families, the Pattersons, and the Ruckles? Where were their original homesteads?

Gordon Lee presents a program that answers these questions and more at the Salt Spring Island Historical Society. Gordon’s focus is on the families of Ed Lee and Tom Lee of Lee Hill and the Burgoyne Valley, who were Salt Spring Island pioneers who arrived in the late 1800’s.

Good afternoon. Warm Welcome. My name is Gordon lake. And on behalf of the lead families with all the other family connections by blood marriage, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Salzburg Historical Society for inviting us here today. Their their family connections lighting would include the Broadwell. Climbing sands of the San Pedro, Patterson James, James, finally buy the latest from the Salt Spring Island Seed Company. For National City tents, and rockets. Its presentation could not come together without the efforts of many people and or connected to our family, photographs, stories, phone calls, the archives and numerous books have in some way contributed to the meat and potatoes of today's presentation. Thank you all, it would be very presumptuous of me to think that today could come together without the resources help long hours turn into days and weeks without the experience of Frank Newman and the support of his wife, Gail, thank you. I invaded your home many times with little or no warning, and they were gracious with their help. Also to my wife, and three children. Thank you for your support. I'll be home tonight.

On a bit of a personal note, this little program has caused me to reflect on my life and my wife and children, I found that it is easy to lose sight of who we are. And wherever you come from. Those made for us work hard with every variable. We've worked hard over conveniences. Beware of endless genealogies 1016 sections of as far back as you can go for me and maybe for you to look back at the good and the not so good times. It's okay. Just as long as we don't get navigational texts, like the Art Center's master. If you keep looking over your shoulder, then you're going to find yourself off course and back there real soon. So somebody knocks out a quick look back learn and what's the history absent finisher box in here, and let's so far, but it's going to be Garson and no one will be able to work. So let's look back, listen and learn that in turn and look ahead, look to your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren or your neighbor. And they have an impact make a difference. What will they learn when they look back at us? This is not a comprehensive exhaustive overview of a family came to Salzburg in 1886 from Ontario 123 years ago. That was the Edward Lee, his wife Martha and her first child murder seven more children than six years later in 1890, Jim Thompson simply and his wife Frances LDS making their way to Sydney on Vancouver Island. They wrote to Jackson beach where Jonathan Park is today. There was a home there and a large boathouse they had some children

it is certainly family which I am a descendant by some Jordan is sixth generation political Saltspring island. There were a few brothers and sisters who are not we're not come to Salt Springs from one of the later prior to own some of the family came from Yorkshire England. They were two generations into one sound before coming to Salt Spring in 1886. Over on the wall is a family tree you can look at again later. Also some items of interest on the table look for basil Teracopy 1886 And soon after built a home at the bottom left hand side of what came to be known as Maple Hill. According to the results bring our family vital, which I have. This home still stands about it is the small white house well off the road. Third on the left as you go up the hill. At the end of the long driveway. The big barns and chicken coops 1000 Farms deteriorated and felt to ruin the time and we're pleased grandson Elber is gainers list in Victoria. with my brother Michael and we continue to chat over the phone. There was a cable splicer for the earliest hydro recruits in BC. A very nice gentleman had 400 acres stretching Prentice Hall, up the hill, across over Ganges road past the big rock toward a chord right down to the corporate Ganges road. To right across from where the little white Methodist church now the megachurch sounds as documented in the Methodist church history, and we donated the land on which to build the parsonage for the minister, which was one acre. Later on. It became the site for the Burgoyne Valley School schoolhouse, which my grandfather attended. Maggie McLennan was the volunteer caretaker of the church until she moved to Victoria. And I quote from the document, revision and education were important considerations to add me, who was one of the founders and trustees of the valley Church of the 400 acres that they preempted 150 acres was under cultivation according to the Reverend Wilson's publication of 1895. On the big property in 1894, and lean produce 700 bushels of wheat, Tennessee, Kansas. That's not Dale, hence the big barn. Also, suddenly, five tons of potatoes harmlessly became the Saltspring in 1892. Had for three years work with his brother producing miracle results. The family also had a small number of registered Jersey milk cows, the first on Saltspring Island. The jerseys were also like record or production lists for authenticity that was in Victoria. Please keep in mind that most if not all, farming, and production soil was first of all covered with Virgin timber, big wood, some strange environment, cedar siding with the website or squared timbers or poles for farms and houses. For example, what I'm talking about for buildings also, then they slash themselves tore them apart, blew them up with dynamite whatever works Tiger rocks to give it a go. Same time a leaf and 250 countries. Some larger farms like a trading partner that has many of 1600 fruit trees were up a large standard variety, not the dwarf varieties that we know today. Almost all of these variety of Apple common Sharing Center came from the old country. In the UK, a mature apple tree could produce up to 2450 pound boxes each. A small number of those trees can still be seen on the Hill Road and down by the old holy farm. The ladders were right at the bottom of the barrel at the top so as to slip up into the branches of the tall trees of 20 feet until the early 70s. My grandparents clipping glass still get apples planted products and raspberries for sale and sold them up their driveway at the old Apple shed battleship I used to love the smell of that place. They were living in the old Tom Lee house the old timers worked hard so they can eat and they still work hard no relaxing days and Sunday wherever those ladies that they haven't electric so automatic dishwasher over the washer and dryer are for the installation. Not a chance you're capable of so my grandfather said he wouldn't die for an airplane was sold double pane windows no light switches no much less. Excuse me Maleficent

And so they call him your sidebar. I just thought About myself we can do the lake but lake was too big a mirror was smaller he sold it to the Herald price I'll tell you later for that when those five or 600 acres it may run to the Simpson family we're all these wife who was a citizen that was her father, very well lovely gentleman who might have the pleasure of meeting and he bought it and then sold it to
