Howard Estes, pre-empted land on Salt Spring Island in 1859 and arrived on the Island with his daughter Sylvia and her husband Louis Stark, in 1860. Howard Estes was born in Clay County Missouri. He probably came to B.C. with the group that were invited by Sir James Douglas and bought 125 acres of land near Island View Beach in what is now Central Saanich, “which he sold in 1867 along with a considerable amount of livestock.”
